KIWITEA-KIMBOLTON HIGHWAY.

“That the contracting firm be informed that the council intends to take the work out of its hands and call fresh tenders for the Kinibolton Road contract unless the work is expedited forthwith” was the text of a resolution moved by Cr J. H. Williamson at the Kiwitea County Council’s monthly meeting yesterday. 'J he motion was defeated. The contract referred to was for the sealing of main highway from Kiwitea to Kimbolton, a distance of five miles. Cr J. H. Williamson, in moving the motion, said that the council had the power to take the job out of the present contractor’s hands. The job had been dragging on, and even if it were to he expedited now it was questionable whether the work would be completed before the wet weather set in. Cr W r . P. Shaw opposed tne motion, stating that he could not agree to the resolution without first haying heard the consulting engineer’s views and tlio explanation of the delay. Cr Shaw: AA'e should be guided by the consulting engineer in this matter. Cr Williamson said the trouble was that the council was not kept posted with the position regarding the road sealing contract. Cr McLean said that the consulting engineer would see that the job was put through to the satisfaction of the council. He (the engineer) had carried out scaling work programmes in the Masterton County in a most creditable manner. Cr McLean assured councillors that when the job was completed it would be a highly satisfactory one. After further discussion Cr McLean put the motion, which was heavily defeated. Crs Williamson. Tnppin and Hair were in favour of the resolution, and the remainder of the council voted against it.

Late yesterday afternoon Mr W. L. Hesseltine (clerk) received a telephone

message from Mr Sladden. the consulting engineer, who stated that he was delayed in Wellington and for that reason was unable to be present at the meeting. He intimated that the scaling of the strip of highway through Kinibolton township would be commenced immediately, and when that had been completed a stretch of one mile every four days would be done. From th eabove information it would appear that the whole five miles of highway will be primed in less than three weeks’ time.
