SYDNEY BOUND.
EMPIRE GAMES ATHLETE. AUCKLAND, Jan. 26. When the Awatea sails for Sydney late this afternoon there will be no happier passenger than Miss Mary Mitchell, of Dargaville, the girl javelin thrower, who was unable to accompany the New Zealand Empire Games team when it sailed at the end of last week for Sydney, owing to an attack of German measles. Since then she created a sensation by walking out of the Wellington Hospital and returning by train to Auckland last week.
Miss Mitchell has been living in isolation with friends at Devonport. Today she looks the picture of health. “I will do my best to win a title for New Zealand,” she said. “Yes. I did have German measles, but only in a mild form. I have been overhauled by an official of the Health Department and he has pronounced me all right. I am not supposed to be out of isolation until to-morrow, however, and have been advised to keep to myself as much as possible on the boat, i will be relieved when the Awatea is at sea.”
