CHESS GAME FINISHED.
AFTER 22 YEARS. POIGNANT. ECHO OF JUTLAND. LONDON, Jan. 10. A game of chess between two naval officers, one of whom was lost in H.M.S. Queen Mary at Jutland, has been completed by the dead officer’s daughter. Miss Eileen McNamee, a telephone operator, who, in one move, forced the retirement of her father’s opponent. Lieutenant - Commander Rogers. In November, 1915, Lieutenant George McNamee, a naval schoolmaster who, before tho war, played chess by wireless with people throughout the world, especially in Australia and the United States, agreed with LieutenantCommander Rogers to play correspondence games. They started two games simultaneously, exchanging moves by diagrams when they reached port. Lieutenant McNamee won the first and second games, and had reached the 27th move in the third game, which he was due to make when the Queen Mary sank with 57 officers and 1000 men.
Lieutenant-Commander Rogers retired from the navy, but kept the chess board intact in memory of the opponent whom lie had never seen. Ho invited Miss McNamee to finish tho gamo. and she agreed.
