EUROPE TO-DAY

ITALY AT WORK. In all its long history Italy has never worked so hard as in the years after the Great War. Whether we like Mussolini or not, the truth is that he deserves his title 11 Duee, from the Latin word dux. a leader, and respect for work is the first article' of Ins creed. Himself a worker, he insists on work in others and has no tolerance whatever for idlers. He pays honour and respect to a hardworking woman bringing up a family of children, and does riot conceal his contempt for the childless woman who spends her time in amusing herself. Work is declared by Italy’s new Labour Charter to be a social duty. We give a translation of the first two articles of the Charter: 1. The Italian nation is an organism having ends, a life, and means superior in power and duration to the single individuals or groups of individuals that compose it. It is a moral, political, and economic unity, which cpllectively realises itself in the Fascist State.

2. Work in all its forms, whether intellectual, technical, or manual, is a social duty. On this score, and only on this score, it is protected by the State.

The passion for accomplishment is apparent everywhere in the new Italy. The nation has become a Working State, and the endeavour is made so to organise work that it serves the best interests of the nation. —(G).
