After tho intense heat exjierieneed the sudden drop in the temperature on Monday caused people to bring out their winter clothing. Mrs D. Foster is visiting Napier. In a cricket match for the Licensed Victuallers’ Cup, at Dannevirke over the week-end, Dannevirke (holders) beat the Mangatainoka eleven. Taking first strike Mangatainoka were dismissed for 91 runs (Dugan, not out, 26; Miller, 2 for 8). The home side replied with 111 (O’Brien 39, Harper 15; Holtham, 5 for 50). Sister M. Pryde, N.G., presided over a meeting of the Loyal Mangatainoka Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., last night, when a motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Bro. A. Barred, P.G. Bro. H. A. Dick was appointed to represent the lodge at a district meeting and the annual meeting of tho District Hospital Association. V.G. Bro. A. Cox reported on the United Friendly Societies’ picnic and P.G. Sister E. Harris reported.that she had attended a meeting of Loyal Victoria Diamond Lodge, Levin. N.G. Sister Pryde welcomed a visitor, Bro. Morris, of Loyal Wanganui Lodge. A letter was received at the last meeting of the Eketahuna County Council from the Pahiatua County Council asking if representatives of the Eketahuna County Council would confer with those of the former and officers of the Agricultural Department, which reference to the control of noxious weeds. The chairman said that undoubtedly the noxious weeds menace was oil the increase he cited localities as evidencing this. The suggestion would probably be made that the county councils take over control. He thought further legislation would be required before the county councils could successfully administei the Act. For instance, it would have to be settled whether special areas could be proclaimed and specially rated for the work of eradication, or whether the cost should be a burden ou the whole county. The chairman, and Crs H. N. Kebbell and W. 0. Twentyman, each representing a riding, were appointed to attend the conference, a date for which is to be arranged.
