NURSING PROFESSION.
FEWER APPLICANTS. Per Press Association. I . AUCKLAND, Jan., 25. A definite decrease in the number of applicants for the nursing profession and a reduction in the number of nurses employed owing to the unforeseen number of resignations were reported by the house committee a.t the meeting of the Auckland Hospital Board to-day) The board discussed the possibility of allowing first-year nurses .a week’s leave at the end of their first six montlis’ service.
The committee’s report, which was adopted, recommended that the Government should be asked to establish a nurses’ preliminary training school to fill the gap between the time of leaving school and starting hospital training. The nursing staff numbered 350 at the beginning of 1937, the report said. In November the number was 391, which was sufficient for the requirements of a slight reduction ill hours. Recently, owing to an unforeseen number of resignations, the number, had dropped to 380.
