EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” JANUARY 26, 1908. In 12 months the number of unemployed in the United States had increased by 400,000. W. Higgs, the successful English jockey, had won £53,917 in stakes for his patrons during 1907. The price for bacon - pigs had been raised to 4Jd per lb, which had been the highest price paid for some time. Likely candidate for the Mayoralty had been Mr Essex (sitting Mayor), Crs Haydon and Luxford, and Mr M. Cohen. *
King Carlos of Portugal and the Crown Prince had been assassinated. The Bunnythorpe Dairy Company had decided to pay 10 2d per lb for January butterfat. Mr Harry Lauder (later Sir Harry) had accepted an offer to tour America for £IOOO a week. It had been the highest salary paid in the United States to an overseas singer. There had continued to be much criticism of the state of Fitzherbert Avenue. One correspondent had wagered that it was impossible to cycle along the street without being bumped off or bogged.
