In the first heat of the world’s 18footer sailing championship the Manene finished thirteenth, the Riptide fifteenth and the Vaalele nineteenth. A light breeze did not favour the New Zealand boats. TRANS-TASMAN RACE. BAD WEATHER PREVAILS. Received January 24, 11.40 a.m. SYDNEY, Jan. 24. The New Zealand cruiser Achilles has reported sighting the yacht Aurora Star, a competitor in the trans-Tas-man race, fifteen miles north of Cape Maria van Diemen. The meteorologist said tho competing yachts would have encountered yesterday’s cyclone, which is causing high seas in the eastern Tasman. It is generally agreed that they will have to ride out the gale hove-to.
