CONTESTS IN SYDNEY. Received January 24, 8.5 a.m. SYDNEY, Jan. 23. The New South Wales athletic championships were* held yesterday. The chief results are : 220yds.—J. Mumford 1, T. Hampson 2; time. 22 3-ssec. 880yds.—C. Hall 1, L. Golf 2; time, 2min. 3-10 sec. Hop, step and jump.—D. Miller, 48ft 9Jin, 1. Pole vault. —W. Cartwright, 12ft. 7in., 1. '„. ' , The hammer-threw. —K. Pardon, 146 ft., 1. Some of the visiting athletes participated in invitation handicap races. The 100 yards race was won by C. Holmes (England) off scratch in lOsec; the 880 vards by B. Eceles (England) in 1min.~57 1-lOsec; the hammer throw by G. Sutherland (Canada) with a throw of 154 ft. 10iin. (an Australian record), and the discus throw by E. Coy (Canada), with a throw of 142tt 7in (a New South Wales record)-
