AUSTRALIA’S FUTURE.

THE MIGRATION FACTOR

Received January 22, 1.55 p.m. NEW YORK, Jan. 21

Mr Dow, the Australian trade representative in America, has written a book entitled “Australia Advances,'’ which will be published on Australia Day. It answers the thousands of questions which have been asked during his fourteen years’ office in the United States. He reveals that in 1907 President Theodore Roosevelt told him Australia should fill the empty;, north with thousands of settlers from Southern European countries. Mr Dow adds: Since the return of improved industrial conditions, with the extension of assisted migration from Britain, it may be anticipated that Australia will elect to forget Theodore Roosevelt’s suggestion. However, he concludes, Australians would be blind indeed if they failed to 6ee the obvious fact that, good or bad, the course of future development will l>e determined by the answer % to one problem : Will Australia, against the will of her present population,' be populated by great masses of 1 lie overcrowded peoples of Asia ? He adds that, more so than any other Dominion of the Empire, Australia’s life depends on the moral influence and practical support of the British Navy.
