MATCH DRAWN.
MANAWATU v HOROWHENUA
The match between Manawatu and Horowlienua was all but completed on the first innings, with the honours in Manawatu’s favour, but Horowlieuna had two wickets in hand at stumps, the result thus being a draw. Manawatu’s 265 were put on at a good pace, for the match commenced at 10.45 a.m. and the innings ended at 3 p.m. Cutler and Hardie, the opening pair for Manawatu, provided 78 runs before being parted. The first 60 appeared in 35 minutes, Gavey and Hunt added 34 and 21 respectively, the latter throwing away his wicket in attempting to force the pace. Williams, who was at the wicket only for a brief period, for 52 runs, included eight fours and a fine six (over the bowler’s head and into the trees) in that total. The remainder of the side did not add 40 runs between them, having instructions to attack the bowling and failing to do so successfully. Mercer bowled consistently for the home side, keeping a good length and occasionally breaking his medium-fast deliveries sharply from the off. H. Baumber, who some years ago was a Manawatu representative player, "had a good partnership with Davidson for the Horowhenua team, the pair making about 70 runs. Baumber retired at's2 and Davidson at 21. F. Baumber’s 14 was the next highest score, the batsman being unlucky in going out to a ball from Naim which kept vey low. The batting on both sides was strong and the bowling, apart from than of Mercer (Horowlieuna) and Nairn and Jewett (Manawatu), rather on the weak'side. The match was played on a matting wicket over turf, which, though it did not appear to affect the style of the Manawatu batsmen, was not altogether to the liking of the bowlers, who were worried in particular by the hard, uneven surface at the approach to the wicket. The outfield was also hard and fast although surprisingly true. The m-fielding of one or two members of the Horowheuna side was smart. The visitors were entertained at luncheon and at afternoon tea and tentative arrangements made for a return matclr at Palmerston North later in the season. Details:— MANAWATU.
