RACING AT RANDWICK. HAMMERHEAD'S GOOD WIN. SYDNEY, Jan. 23. For racing at Randwick, where the course was heavy - because of overnight showers and further rain to-day, the attendance slumped, and this led to the free use of the scratching pencil. Hammerhead had a clearcut victory in the Challenge Stakes; the much fancied Brown Baroness wearing herself out pursuing Brazandt. Panastcr also won the January Handicap convincingly from. Prittle Prattle. Three horses fell in 'the Trial Hurdles, but the riders escaped with minor injuries. Capaneus finished second, but Princo Pombal shaped indifferently in this event. Miltiades, 8.5, 3. Thirteen started. Half a length; a length. Time, 1.25. CHALLENGE STAKES. Six furlongs. HAMMERHEAD, V. 9 (Harvey) 1 BROWN BARONESS, 7.10 (Hickey) . 2 MARK ANTONY, 7.5 (Duncan) 3 Scratched: Arabia, Micawber, Bodley Head, Tolerant. A length; three lengths. Time, 1.135. JANUARY HANDICAP. One mile and a quarter.—Panaster, 7.5 (Duncan), 1; Prittle Prattle, 8.4, 2; Rossjoy, 6.11, 3. Shakespeare was scratched. Three, lengths; half a length. Mananui was fifth. Time, 2.103. Troy finished second in the Bondi Handicap, which was won easily by Rex. Red Rosebud was third in the Paddington Handicap, won by Mordent. HUA WINS AGAIN. WILLIAM REID STAKES. MELBOURNE, Jan. 23. It is not often that tho favourite in the Melbourne Cup defeats a first-olass sixfurlong fiold at his next start. In doing this in the William Reid Stakes at Moonce Valley Hua proved his class once again. Jupiter recorded his third 6uccossivo win over the jumps, when he annoxod tho Tweedside Hurdlo. REGULAR BACHELOR, 8.11 (Beasley) 3 Eleven started, including Amiable. A length and three-quarters; a head. Time, 1.114 a course record. CALDERMEADE HANDICAP. One mile and a quarter.—Bellevue, 7.4 (Morris), 1; The Riff, 8.1, 2; The Wizard, 7.7, 3. Ten started. A neck; half a head. Time, 2.54. Prince Quex was second in the Warrock Highweighfc Handicap, won by Lady Mauve. Silver Bond was unplaced in the Cranmallan Trial Handicap. The Veilmond colt, Veiled Prophet, won the second division of the Niddrie Handicap in the course record time of I.OjJ for five furlongs.
