RUGBY SUB-UNION FUNDS.
PONGAROA MAN CHARGED
Six charges of theft were brought against Thomas Leslie Alexander, alias Avison, a labourer, aged 28, of Poiwaroa, when lie appeared before Mr J L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North to-day. The charges preferred against accused were: (1) The theft, on December 4 1937, at Ponguroa, of £lO4 6s 9d, the property of the Puketoi Rugby Sub-Union; (2) the theft, at Pongoroa, on April 17 last of £l, and between February 1, 1936. and April 1/, 1937, of £49 9s 2id, the property of the sub-union; (3) the theft, at 1 ongaroa, on May 1 last, of £4 10s, and between May 1 and July 31, 1937, oi £43 los 7d, the property of the subunion; (4) the theft, at Pongaroa, on April 27 last, of £4 10s, the property of tho suli-union; (5) the theft. at Pongaroa, on July 31 last, of £2 10s, the property of the sub-union; (6) the theft at Pongaroa on July 31, 1937, of £lO 7s Id, the property of the Girls’ Coast Hockey Club. Accused was further charged that, being a person excluded under the Gaming Act regulations, he did trespass on the Woodville racecourse during a race meeting on December 13. Detective-Sergeant Meiklejohn asked that the first charge he dismissed, as he would offer no evidence on that, there being alternative charges. Accused pleaded not guilty to the second and sixth charges of theft, but guilty to the other three. ■ On the application of Detective-Ser-geant Meiklejohn, accused was remanded until Friday on all these Accused was fined £5, with 12s costs, on the charge of trespassing on the racecouse, default being fixed at 14 days’ imprisonment.
