BRADDOCK BEATS' FARE. BIG FIGHT IN NEW YORK. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) NEW YORK, Jan. 21. James Braddock gained a points decision over Tommy Farr in a tenround boxing bout to-night. Farr entered the ring weighing 14st 111 b and Braddock 14st 3ilb. Joe Louis (world heavyweight champion) was among the spectators. A partisian crowd of 20,000 cheered mostly for Braddock, who came back in the dosing rounds when it appeared that he had lost. Ho fought Farr off his feet, and inflicted heavy punishment. In the first round both were cautious and sparred lightly. Braddock landed a right to the head at the bell, the first real blow of the fight. It was Braddock’s round. A , In the second round they traded bodv blows and left jabs to the face. Braddock scored with hard rights to the jaw and body. It was Braddock s round. _ , The third round I' arr opened with a two-fisted attack. Braddock clinched frequently and the 111511 exchanged hard rights and lefts Braddock 5 left ear was bleeding. It was Darrs 1 fourth round Braddock drove a hard right to the jaw and a left to the face, and Farr a left and right to the face. Then there was a long series of clinches. Farr s left cheek was scratched and bleeding. It was Farr’s round. „ , For the fifth round Farr came out fast and landed a series of left jabs. Braddock retaliated with a right to the head and a left to the face Fan returning lefts to the face and head. Farr swarmed over Braddock witn lefts and rights to the body. Braddock then got in a left and right to the face, and a right to the body. It was Farr’s round. , , , In the sixth round both men traded body blows. Farr sent a bard left to the body and a right to the face. He then began a two-fisted attack to the body. One left seemed low and the crowd yelled at Farr who sent in a series of hard rights to the body and a left to the side of Braddock s chest, which was crimson. V arr s nose was bleeding slightly. Farr sent in a right to the face, the best blow thus far, and scored repeatedly with lefts and rights to the body, it uas Farr’s round. , , ~ . , In the seventh round both missed repeatedly- Braddock scored . with a left to the face, and Farr with lefts and rights to the head and body. It was Farr’s round. , At the start of the eighth round Farr sent in a left to the body and Braddock lefts and rights to the face. Farr delivered two lefts to the head and Braddock a hard right to the face, Farr returning a right to tlie face and a hard right to the jaw, also a series of lefts and rights to the face. Braddock then clinched and the pair exchanged blow's to the head and body. It was again Farr’s round. The ninth round, Braddock began with a left to the body and a right to the head, but Farr bore in and landed a hard right to the body. Braddock retaliated with two lefts to the face, several rights to the head and a left to the jaw, a right to the head, and 11 right to the body. This was Biaddock’s round. . f In the tenth round, Farr lead a left to the body, Braddock jolting in a left to the head. Farr returned a left to the head, Braddock sending in a liarcl right to the chin. They fought savagely in the centre of the ring, Fanripping in rights and lefts to the body and Braddock a hard right to the face, a left to the jaw, an overhand smash to tlie head, and a right and left to the face. It was also Braddock s round.
Farr won the British Empire title by defeating Ben Foord, tho South African, at the Harringay Stadium London, in 1937 Foord had previously taken the title from Peterson. After winning the British Empire heavyweight title, Farr caused something of a sensation bv beating in succession three ex-world’s champions, in Bob Olin Tommy Loughran, and Max Baer. Olin’and Loughran wore lightweights Parr was then offered £IO,OOO to meet Schrocling the German, who knocked Joe Loins out, but the Englishman turned tins offer down to have a tilt at the world title against Louis.
