COMMENT ON PLAY.
OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
In the match between Mrs Keys. Auckland, and Mrs Wood, Palmerston North, the long shooting by Mrs Keys was excellent. At the commencement of the game a long shot secured her all the balls in the field and, making a perfect break, she went round to rover. In-and-out play followed, when Mrs Wood made a few points, after which Mrs Keys, getting in a shot, finished the game 26 —3. In the second game in-and-out play was a feature for some time until Mrs Wood hitting in, completed a break of eight, although Mrs Keys, with a long shot after four back, made four more points. Mrs Wood again got control and finished 26—10. In the third game both players played substantial breaks, Mrs Keys ultimately getting control and finishing 26—17.
Mrs Simpson (Palmerston North) v. W. F. Jarvie. —Jarvie scored two points before Mrs Simpson, playing carefully, played a round to penultimate. Jarvie then hit in and carried his clip to third return, where he failed. In-and-out play followed until all clips w’ere even. Jarvie then missed a short roquet after making rover, after which Mrs Simpson pegged out her opponent’s rover ball, but in attempting rover with the other failed to get position when Jarvie hit in and finished a very close game. In the second game of the rubber Jarvie soon established a good lead, and although Mrs Simpson had the balls several times she failed to make the most of the opportunities and Jarvie finished 26 —8.
F, L. Harrison v. Mrs McMurray.— Harrison, playing carefully, won the first game, Mrs McMurray scoring 21 points. In the second game Harrison had both clips on the peg when his opponent was only on No. 1 and No. 3. Mrs McMurray staged a marvellous recovery, gradually, by careful play, working both clips round, winning the game by two points before Harrison could hit the long shot. In the last game both players were evenly matched, and it was only in the final stages that Harrison finished ahead by a small margin. Mrs Garmbrill v. J. Tannock. —Tannock hit. in with tho fourth ball and completed a perfect round to penultimate, where he failed with a short shot, letting in his opponent. Mrs Gambrill also completed a substantial break, but failed at third return. In-and-out play followed for a short time until Tannock finished 26 —15. In the second game Tannock again played well, soon having his clip on the return, and with a faulty shot by Mrs Gambrill at first return Tannock, making the most of the opportunity, finished 26—8.
