SURF EVENTS.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. OPENING AT NEW BRIGHTON. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 22. The pick of New. Zealand’s surf teams gathered at New Brighton today for the opening events of the national surf life-saving championships. Interest was added to the championships by the fact that 29 nominees for inclusion in the Empire Games team were among the competitors. The championships will conclude tomorrow, and on Monda.y there will be a final test to choose the team. The events were held in ideal weather with a fair surf running. The day was warm and overcast, the absence of the sun making visibility good. The events began on a. falling tide. The entries were about on a par with last year. Results :

Four men alarm championship.— First heat: Maranui B (D. Evans, J. Clark, K. F. Hoy. H. Hawken) 1, Lyall Bay A 2, St. Clair B and Sumner B equal 3. Maranui B were the first to touch just ahead of Lyall Bay. Times. 3min 23 4-ssec and Smin 25sec. Second heat: New Brighton B (R. Cooper, C. McKenzie. M. Bntterick. G. Horwell) 1, St. Clair A 2. Lyall Bay B were disqualified, their beltman being the first to touch the buoy. Worser Bay did not start. Times, 3min 48sec and 3min 55 2-ssec. Third heat: Maranui A (E. A. Raven. F. Pennington, E. B. Hughes and T. Hewett) 1. Ta.vlor’s Mistake 2, Oreti 3. Taranaki 4. Maranui have won the trophv four times. Although Tavlnr’s Mistake were the first to touch followed bv Oreti. Maranui won on the resuscitation and drill points. Times. 3min 38sec and 3min 24sec. Fourth heat: North Beach (G. Griffith, J. McDonald. R. Gibbons and A. Dalton) 1. New Brighton A 2. Stunner A was scratched. North Bench established a comfortable lead and was never seriously challenged. Times, 3min 27 2-ssec and 3min 50 2-s.<*c.
