LAWN TENNIS

MANAWATU TOURNEY. THE OPENING GAMES. Open to only active members of clubs affiliated to the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association, the Manawatu tennis tournament was commenced this morning, the men playing on the Palmerston North Club’s courts and the women at the Northern Club. In the men’s section the entries were good, and up to the usual standard, but in the women’s division the numbers were smaller. In addition, two of the foremost women, Mesdames It. P. Adams (Levin) and V. Hobin (Palmerston North) sertatohed this morning owing to indisposition. The courts were very fast and a variable wind proved disturbing to somo of the players. Although overcast at times, the day was hot. Messrs L. I. Plimmor and D. \V. Creed were in charge of the tournament, being assisted by Mr J. T. McDonald.

The earlier results were as follow: MEN’S SINGLES.

First round.—D. R. Chisholm heat R. Cowley, 6—0,-6—2; J. Christie beat K. Anderson, 6—o, 6—l; \V. Gloyn heat L. F. Evans, 6—3, 6—-0; A. Bovis beat C. Swallow, 5—7, 7—5, 6—4; J. Cope beat H. Merritt, 6—4, 6—2; D. Spring beat G. Simon, 6—>2, 5—7, 6—l.

Men’s doubles.—Spragge and Cope beat Johansen and Lee, 6—o, 6—o.
