AT ASHHURST.

EVEN MONEY’S HURDLES

FAST LATE RUN

At the Ashhurst meeting, Even Money, who had had a spell since racing at Feilding, finished very strongly in the Hack Hurdles Handicap after being in the rear most of the journey, to beat Count Willonyx, the favourite, who again had to accept a minor plac-

Money was last for most of the journey, but’moved up very fast on the outside during the last half-mile and gathered up Count Willonyx, who was leading 50 yards from the post, to win comfortably, Count Willonyx ran a good race, lying fourth half a mile from home behind Camilla Horn, King’s Lancer and Contact. He moved up very quicky and was actually first over the final fence from Camilla Horn,, Hanover and Even Money challenging. Hanover lost his rider at this obstacle and Even Money finished with a rush on the outside to take the honours. Camilla Horn ran her most improved race for some time, going up to take charge half a mile from home. Contact’s form was disappointing. McDowell, the rider of Hanover, was not injured. THREE ON END. GREAT HOPE CONSISTENT. Scoring his third victory on end, Great Hope made short work of the opposition in the Pohangina Handicap' to score a comfortable victory after attending the pacemaker, Lifeguard, three furlongs from home.Joviality was first rut from Notium, and this pair were in behind Lifeguard from the three furlongs peg. Joviality then began to fade-away, but Notium hung on well to fill second place a length and a-half behind the winner, with Bodyline, who came up fast in the concluding stages, a length back third. Lifeguard weakened into fourth place, followed by Mister Quex and Golden Chest,

SILVANUS WINS WELL. DESPITE BAD START. Although she got the worst of the start, Silvanus, who had raced well on the Taranaki circuit, made a fast run on the outside from the rear of the field to beat Erebus by a length in the Komako Hack Handicap, for which ten scratchings reduced the field to five runners. Son and Heir was first out, but Erebus ran up fast to attend him to the straight, where the leaders drew out a bit. Silvanus, who had been in the rear, then put in a sustained run, and while Erebus and Son and Heir were fighting it out, was rushed up on the outside of the two lead/rs and. with a final sprint, beat the tiring Erebus convincingly. Erebus was just able to hold off Son and Heir by a neck. WILDFLOWER’ S CUP. WON BY A NOSE. Piloted by the Awapuni apprentice, J. Chaplin, who had steered her to victory in the Aldworth Stakes at Marto’n, the favourite, Wildflower, just got home by a bare nose in a great finish to win the Ashhurst Cup. She had the benefit of a 71b. allowance. Master Cyklon and Helen Ford were the early leaders, with Wildflower well back and Terry tailing the field. Pladie moved up to take charge from Master Cyklon half a mile from home, where Wildflower, Boomerang and Alby were running next. Wildflower hit the front at the foot of the straight, with Boomerang in behind her. Terry came up with a rush and a great finish ensued when Alby joined issue on the outside. Wildflower lasted just long enough to hold off the fast-finishing Terry, with Alby, who was finishing on, only a short neck away. Boomerang went a fair race to fill fourth place, with Helen Ford, Master Cyklon and Pladie next. Last year’s winner, Grand Jury, was never in the picture.
