BOWLING TOURNEY.

DEFEAT OF CARSWELL. YESTERDAY ’SHRINKS PLAY. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Jan. 20. Post-section play in the ririlcs at the championship bowling tourney was continued in perfect weather this morning on one green. Results: Two-life division. —Wilson (Linwood), a bye; Britten (Sydenham) 23 v. Foster (Caversliam) 10; Aitchison (Caledonian) 19 v. Thomson (Phoenix) 8. One-life division. —Marks (Christchurch) 21 v. Veitch (West Harbour) 17; Bull (Hawera) 22 v. Webster (Kaituna) 11; Dowland (St. Tvilda) 25 v. Ferguson (Ba.lmacewan) 21 ; Thomson (Balmacewan) 18 v. Carswell (Taieri) 16; Piper (Maitai) 18 v. Tyrrell (Roslyn) 14. In the Britten v. Foster game, the former proved much too strong and the Caversliam man abandoned play after the eighteenth head. He did not receive much support-from his team. Aitchison’s rink turned on their best form for the tournament and will take much beating in the finals. It was obvious that their opponents from Oamaru found the green too fast, but fought a losing battle well. The veteran Carswell put up a great fight against Thomson, and after being well down in the early stages led at the twelfth head, after which Thomson regained the advantage and won after a dose finish. Both skips and leads gave good exhibitions of bowling. Bull’s combination proved too solid for Webster, the skip playing fine unshots and building his heads cleverly. The feature of the Dowland v. Ferguson game was a sound exhibition of leading on bath sides and a splendid recovery on the part of Dowland who. after being down 10—1 on the sixth head, piled on points to score a meritorious win, 25—21. Veitch, who with Britten was the only unbeaten rink in the section nlav went down to Marks after an inteiesting game, leading up to the sixteenth head, when he lost touch and the Christchurch man gained the lead and kept it to the finish.
