POHANGINA COUNTY.
ROAD IMPROVEMENTS. The decision to take steps immediately to improve the Te Awa-Ridge Road corner, was made at the meetin.r of the Pohangina County Council on” Wedesday, when Cr T. Craine, commenting that school children had to be transported from this district to Kiwitea, stated that this point was too narrow and too acuto for safety. Instructions were issued to the engineer to carry out some improvements on the upper sections of No. 1 and No. 3 Lines, Cr Montgomery stating that he had been approached by settlers regarding this work. It was resolved, on the motion ot Ci- W. McKay, to ask the Kiwitea County engineer and the district engineer of the Public Works Department to inspect, in company ' with the Pohangina county engineer, both the Apiti-Kimbolton and the Marton Block bridges. They were stated to be urgently in need of repair. The suggestion was made by Cr W. Howell that a list of the corners to be cut back be drawn up, the engineer to submit estimates of the cost. The council could then consider whether to purchase machinery or to let the work by contract. Cr McKay said that the corfncil had a tractor and, with the proper additional implements, should be able to cut back corners as economically ns having the work done by contract. He thought modern machinery for such work should he seen working. -Or Mackenzie stated that banking was better than cutting corners down, but the matter was deferred until the next meeting, the engineer being instructed to supply further information.
Notice of his intention to move at the next meeting of the council that all special rates be pooled was given bv Cr Mackenzie. Tt was decided to nnnl.v the 10 per cent, penalty on unpaid rates on February 24. <
