WOMAN ATHLETE.
RETURN TO AUCKLAND. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Jan. 20. A surprise was caused in athletic circles here this morning when Miss Mary Mitchell, the javelin thrower, who was reported to be in isolation in Wellington with German measles, returned to Auckland. On leaving the train she went immediately to the Auckland Hospital and later stated, that she had been given a clean hill of health and did not think she had to remain in isolation. This afternoon she left the hotel where she was staying temporarily and went to stay with friends. She now expects to receive advice from athletic officials that she will he permitted to sail for the Games by to-morrow evening. CLEARANCE OBTAINED. AUCKLAND, Jan. 20. Neither the officials nor the team’s medical adviser knew until this afternoon that Miss Mitchell had left Wellington. The manager. Mr McCormick, said lie had been advised from Auckland that Miss Mitchell had been given a clearance by the Auckland Hospital. The opinion of the medical adviser was that she definitely should not be permitted to travel by the Monterev, as it was essential she should be isolated. Mr McCormick added that, if Miss Mitchell was all right by January 26, she would be able to leave by the Awatea on that date.
