AWAHURI ROAD
SEALING PROPOSALS. REVIEW OF~PROGRESS. An outline of the progres sof negotiations made for the sealing of the Feilding-Awahuri Road and Stewart’s Line (from Mount Stewart to the Awahuri Road) was given at the monthly meeting, yesterday, of the Manawatu County Council. The chairman (Cr. W. E. Barber) said that he had suggested at one time that the sealing of Stewart’s Line be proceeded with in the meantime, without waiting for the commencement of operations on the Eeilding- Awahuri Road, but the Main Highways Board wanted alterations made to the road and required specifications of the work before it was commenced. That had held up matters considerably. There had been some time spent on consideration of matters connected with the deviation of the Fielding-Awaliuri Road. Various settlers had been met and they wanted compensallion 'for being cut off from water and bush shelter. A visit had been made to Wellington in connection with the late Mr W. Hunter’s estate, the water being severed by the deviation. However. Mr Huhter had passed away. An interview had been held with the administrators of the estate and they were to look into the matter. The engineer (Mr 11. V. Bond) said he had received a communication from the administrators, who had stated they had not yet taken over the full responsibility, but when they had done so the matter would be attended to. The chairman said that the amounts of the compensation to be paid would have to be decided, because the Main Highways Board would want to know the total cost.
Replying to Cr. J. H. Perrett, the clerk (Mr A. IC. Drew) said that there was a sum of £3OOO in the loan account and £6OOO authorised, but not yet raised. Cr. D- W. Reid remarked that as soon as the authority of the Main Highways Board was received a start should be made. lie moved that the engineer be authorise dto cal Renders for the construction work as soon as required. Cr. Perrett seconded the motion. The chairman remarked that the Feilding people themselves had “fone to sleep” on the matter. He had gone to them and asked them to get behind the council to have the work put in hand. Now, the work was going to cost a lot more than it would have done them
Cr. Reid: Very nearly double. The chairman added that all the specifications and surveys required could not be taken out in a short time. That work' had to go through the county office.
The motion was the npassed unanimously.
