FOXTON.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Jan. 18.
The monthly meeting of tho Borough Council was held last night and was presided over by the Mayor (Mr M. E. Porrcuu). The gas manager reported that during tho mouth 235,000 cubic feet of gas were manufactured. Tho clerk reported that owing to tho bouts not trading to the port tho council had been compelled to procure its coal supplies through tho railway, resulting in considerably increased costs. It was anticipated that the Iluanui would resume trading at an early date, however. Or D. R. Barron moved that in tuture owners of any slock trespassing on the borough streets bo prosecuted. ’ibis was agreed to. The road foreman reported that Avenue and Moutoa Roads, together with Purcell and Duncan Streets, had been graded, and mowing done throughout the borough. Steps wore now being taken to lay down a footpath in the cemetery. Tho waterworks foreman reported that tho baths were broken into; tho police had apprehended a lad in this connection, l'ortyeiglit flags, part of the town’s Christmas decorations, had boon stolen from tho street, but no trace had been found of these. Cr W. H. Road reported that tho willows on the banks of the Awahou drain in Johnston Street were creating a menace to traffic on the highway. It was decided to have them cut down at once. A request for the sealing of llavensworth Placo Road was agreed to. The statutory meeting of tho council, held in conformity with the Shops and Offices Act, for the purpose of fixing the halfday in Foxton lor the ensuing year, created more than usual interest. A petition was presented by Wednesday supporters praying for tho retention of that day. Saturday supporters did not tako such active measures in support of their desires, no doubt feeling confident that the council’s decision would be in their favour, but supporters present to hear tho discussion, voiced their arguments at the request of tho Mayor after the Wednesday petition had been presented. The council’s final decision was for Saturday closing by a majority of six to three. The following resolution was carriod: "That in view of the appointment of Saturday as the weekly half-holiday in Foxton, a movement advocated by various shopkeepers, ratepayers and trade unions, we ask these several sections of tho community to give their whole-hearted support to tho local business houses.”
An earthquake occurred at 2.44 p.m. to-day.
A skull was picked up by a camper at Manawatu Heads tho other day. It was found to be very old and is considered to bo that of a female Maori, probably part of a skeleton uncovered by recent winds. J. M. McGregor, a Nativo bolonging to Foxton, appeared.before Mr D. R. Ogilvy, J.P., charged with being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a car. He was remanded to appear in Palmerston North on January 24, hail being allowed in one surety of £SO. Mr and Mrs J. S. Hornblow and family, of Palmerston North, have taken a house on the waterfront. Mr and Mrs J. W. Spooner and family, of Palmerston North, are new arrivals on the camping ground. Mi's 11. Mcßrearty, of Linton, is visiting her mother, Mrs C. Dawson. Mr and Sirs W. A, Boniface and family, of Palmerston North, are spending a month at tlieir beach house in Linklater Avenue.
Mr R. Hart has disposed of Ilia business at the beach owing to all-health. Mr and Mrs Hart have boon in business at the beach for tho past fourteen yoars, during which time they have made many friends, who will miss them from the resort when they leave towards the end of the present month. Mr and Mrs Hart intond leaving the district for about six months.
The large crowd on ocean beach witnessed with interest a very fine demonstration given by the members of tho Foxton Surf and Life Saving Club, under tho control of tho captain (Mr G. Shaw) and Mr Y. Fleming (vice-captain). The team was as follows! —M. Doyle (putiont), J. Shorthouso (bcltman), G. Monaghan (first linesman), O. Baird (reel), D. Vertongen (second linesman), D. Yorko (third linesman). At a meeting of tho Foxton Tennis Club committee it was decided that tho trophies donated by Mr Anderson for tho mixed doublos handicap competition should bo presented to tho successful compeitors, Miss R. Easton, and Mr L. Williams, at tho courts and that Mr T. Kano (president) bo asked to make the presentation.
A meeting of the Foxton Surf and Life Saving Club was held on Friday evening, tho captain (Mr G. Shaw) occoupying tho chair. It was decided to placo on l'ocord tho appreciation of .the club for the valuable assistance rendered by the following:—Mrs F. Procter, Mr J. Macdonald, Messrs Alexander Clark (Palmerston North), Mr McMurray (Palmerston North), Mr Allen (Palmerston North), Mr R. Hart and Mrs J. Walls. Tho secretary was instructed to write thanking Mr _ McMurray, of Palmerston North, for his efforts on behalf of tho club during the Christmas holidays, and asking him to accept the position ot social organiser for tho club. Mr Y. K. Fleming was elected to the position of vicecaptain left vacant by the departure from Foxton of Mr W. Neville. Tho secrotary was instructed to write to the Now Zealand Surf Association regarding the cost of a surf boat. Tho chairman advised that Sclwyn’s Ford Entertainers had offered to stage an entertainment at Manawatu Heads, if the club could arrange for tho hire of a lorry and a piano. It was decided to accept the offer and a dato was decided upon. It was decided to grant permission to tho vice-captain, Mr Fleming, to form a committee in Palmerston North, with the object of starting a drivo for funds. It was decided that patrol captains bo appointed to arrange shifts while tho club was on duty.
