DEFENCE OF TRADE ROUTES.

OPERATIONS AT SINGAPORE. (British Official Wireless.) Received. January 20, 10.30 a.nr. RUGBY, Jan. 19. In combined sea, land and air operations at Singapore on February 5 the new batteries, which have been completed at Singapore, will obtain their first opportunity to engage targets in mimic warfare. In connection with the opening of the new Singapore dock it is pointed out that it is well understood that it involves no threat to any Power, merely representing a commonsense insurance i>y Britain in connection with the defence of the Empire’s trade routes. Defensive measures against air attack in Malaya have been receiving the same attention as elsewhere, and the civil Governnient is co-operating on this occasion as regards the practice of “bla-ck outs,” which, will be confined to selected areas .of the island.
