A tense incident occurred at Tientsin to-day, the British authorities refusing to hand over the Chinese living in the British Concession to the Japanese Army. The Japanese threatened to enter the Concession. The British officer replied: “We shall he compelled to resist,” after which the Japanese modified. tlieir attitude.
JAPANESE SHIP SAILS,
SCRAP METAL LEFT BEHIND. SYDNEY, Jan. 19. Tlie Japanese motor-ship Melbourne Maru sailed for Japan to-day without her cargo of lead iqgots and tin clippings, owing to the waterside workers refusing to handle scrap metal convertible into .munitions. There was also no response to a call for free labour.
