BOWLING
RINKS COMPETITION SECTION PLAY CONCLUDES. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Jan. 18. Everything is contributing toward making tho New Zeala'-d howling tournament one of the most successful in the association’s hitsory. The weather was again fine and hot, although a strong wind late in the afternoon made conditions more difficult. The seventh and eighth rounds of the rinks championship produced some most interesting games. Only two rinks, those skipped by Veitch (West Harbour) and Britten (Sydenham) go through to post-section play with eight wins. One of the most interesting matches in to-day’s play was that between Devereux (Kaikorai) and Madsen (Opawa), who had come through the first six rounds unbeaten. They met in the morning round and the result was a comfortable win for Madsen. Devereux, however, scored a convincing win in the afternoon against Oakey’s Elmwood rink, while Madsen lost by a fair margin to the Westport rink skipped by Head. Both, therefore, finished section play with seven wins. Nelson’s Dunedin rink also met its first defeat in the seventh round, ' going down 16-28 to Marks (Christchurch), bub the Dunedin skip won again in the afternoon.
Both Veitch and Britten appear in top form. Veitch had two good wins to-day, beating Gardiner (Southland), 20 14, and Horton (Palmerston North), 30 —18. Britten also maintained his form to score well against Honeyman (Otago) and Ingram (Victoria). To-morrow’s play will comprise three rounds of post-sectional games on the automatic two-life system.
