EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” JANUARY 19, 1908. As an inducement to the right type of girl to take up the nursing profession, the Wellington Hospital Board had decided to increase the salaries of certificated nurses to £4O a year, with £6O a year for sisters. A Roman Catholic bazaar held in Palmerston North had shown a profit of over £7OO. Bush fires had raged in the Taihape district. The town had been ingrave danger and fire-fighting parties had stayed up for several night. The Wharekoa and Makonui estates had been cut up and sold by auction at Feilding. The average price had been £3l 6s per acre. The Glen Oroua Dairy Company had been manufacturing 70 boxes of butter a day. The Levin Company had been turning out 35 boxes. The retail price of butter had been Is 2d. Milk had been selling at 4d a quart. Following the fires in the Manawatit - Gorge, the hillsides' had looked very desolate, the usual beauty having gone. ,
