BOXING IN AUSTRALIA.
CARROLL OUTPOINTS LETO. AMBROSE PALMER RETURNS. Received January 19, 8.5 a.m. SYDNEY, Jan. 18. Two big fights were witnessed tonight at the Sydney Sports Ground, wtiich was filled to capacity. The first bout was between the Victorian, Ambrose Palmer, 12st 41b, who staged a comeback,' and received a points decision against the West Australian, Claude Nichol, 13st 61b, in a willing eight-round fight. Nichol fought wonderfully well and greatly impressed the spectators. Palmer displayed all his former skill and. ringcraft.
It was announced from the ringside that arrangements were being made to bring Jack McAvoy to Australia to fight for the British Empire title. He will be matched against Palmer. The main contest was a. ten-round bout between Jack Carroll, lOst 81 lb, and the American, Jimmy Leto, lOst 71b, which, like the former fight, was worthy of the two fine exponents of theboxing game. Carroll gained a points decision which actually was never m doubt. He boxed with the utmost caution in the early rounds, fearing Leto s dangerous left hook. Carroll relied on long left jabs, two of .which in the fifth and eights rounds rocked the American. He also pounded Leto’s body in close fighting. Leto rallied finely in the sixth and ninth rounds, driving Carroll to the ropes. The fight was clean, with honours on the side of the Australian, who was a crafty and tough opponent.
