BATTLE NEAR TSINING.

ADVANCE OF JAPANESE. SHANGHAI, Jan. 17. A fierce battle is raging south-ivest of Tsining.' The Japanese have reached Haichow and are advancing westward to Soochow. A Tokio message states that the Japanese navy is engaged in blowing up the vessels sunk by the Chinese in Tsingtao Harbour. Vessels below 2000 tons will l>e able to navigate the waters under which two gunboats and five steamers still lie. A London message states that, according to the Peking correspondent of the Times, the Japanese have apologised for an official forcibly ejected a uniformed officer of the British Embassy guard from the station.
