Received January 18, 11.40 a.m. SHANGHAI, Jan. 17. jThe Japanese report a battle, which lasted throughout the day, with strong Chinese forces ten miles west of Hangchow. A hundred thousand Outer Mongolians captured Paipingmaio, and are now concentrating in Western Suiyun for a drive eastward. Some bluejackets have landed at Chcfoo from the British warship Lowestoft to safeguard foreign lives and property 7 . The British Consul-General at Shanghai is investigating a Japenese invitation to the Manchester Guardian correspondent to go to the Japanese headquarters in connection with a Press despatch handed in yesterday raising the’ whole question of the censorship affecting British subjects. Chinese coolies are suspected of throwing a bomb at the Shanghai Evening Post Office, wounding three employees.
