BUTTER MARKET QUIETER. CHEESE IMPROVES. The London butter market was quieter at the close of business last week, while prices remain practically unchanged, according to advice received by the Primary Products Marketing Department. Friday’s closing quotations, with thoso for the previous week shown in parentheses, were as follow: New Zealand, salted, 112 sto 113 s (112 s; a year ago, 95s to 965)-; unsalted, 114 s (113 s to 114 s: a year ago, 98s to 100 s). Australian, salted, Ills to 112 s (110 s to Ills); unsalted, 112 sto 13s. Danisli, 113 s f.0.b., 135 s spot (114 s, 1355). Dutch, unsalted, 112 sto 116 s (114 s). Lithuanian, unsalted, 116 s (ll6s). Retail prices in London are: —New Zealand, Is 2d a lb; Danish, Is 4d. The basic rates fixed under the Now Zealand guaranteed price scheme, subject to quality differentials, are 123 s 8d for butter and 70s 4id for cheese per cwt.,_ f.0.b.. New Zealand currency. The equivalent landed price for butter in London is 112 s and for cheese 675. DELIVERIES OF BUTTER. Deliveries of New Zealand butter last week were 2232 tons, compared with 1970 tons for the previous week, and 2100 tons a year ago. The quantity in store amounted to 3918 tons, including 1436 tons ex Port Chalmers and Waipawa, compared with 3175 tons for the previous week, and 5591 tons a year ago, Australian deliveries totalled 3055 tons, compared with- 1544 tons for the previous week, and 1951 tons a year ago. The quantity in store amounted to 2707 tons, against 2744 tons for the previous week, and 4020 tons a year ago. STEADY DEMAND FOR CHEESE. The cheeso market continues to improve, with a steady demand at the higher price levels, while the market is now practically bare of available supplies. Prices last week showed an of 3s for both white and coloured. Friday’s closing quotations, with those for the previous week in parentheses, were ns follow: New Zealand, white, 68s to 69s (65s to 65» 6d; a year ago, 55s to 55s 6dj; coloured, 69s to 69s 6d (66s to 66s 6d; a year ago, 55s to 55s 6d). Australian, white, 64s to 66s (b2s to 63s 6d); coloured, 64s to 67s (63s to 64s 6d), Canadian, white, 73a to 74s (72s to 735); coloured, 73a to 74s (73s to 745). English, finest farmers’, 96s to 98s (96.* to 98s).
The New Zoaland retail price remains unchanged at 9d a lb. Deliveries of New Zealand cheese lastweek totalled 15,074 crates, against 18,710 crates for the previous week, and 14,132 crates a year ago. The quantity in store, including 11,970 crates ex the Port Chalmers and Waipawa, amounted to 45,390 crates, against 44,169 crates for tho previous week, and 44,157 crates a year ago. Deliveries of Canadian cheese amounted to 7586 boxes, against 7639 boxes a year ago, the quantity in store being 126,484 boxes, compared with 105,802 boxes a year ago. Gradings of New Zealand cheese for the week ended January 8 were 26,170 crates of white, and 12,422 crates of coloured, a total of 38,592 crates.
