CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.
HOSTILITIES TO CONTINUE. TOKIO, Jan. 15. As the background to to-day’s conference of members of the Cabinet and Imperial Headquarters officials, the Domei News Agency says Japan was prepared to negotiate direct with Marshal Chiang Kai-shek, whose failure to reconsider his policy, however, compelled Japan to .accept the challenge to wage protracted hostilities to eradicate the anti-Japa.nese regime. The British Ambassador (Sir Robert Craigie) lias disposed of the story that the noted author, Mr Makoto Watanabe, called at the Embassy and dramatically handed over a dagger, saying “Here’s my message to Mr Eden.” Sir Robert Craigie explains that Mr Watanabe presented an antique Japanese sword, a family heirloom, in token of friendship and admiration for Britain. He expressed the hope that the Anglo-Japanese Treaty would bo revived. The Domei Agency, says the fact that Mr Watanabe was later questioned by the police gave rise to the story with harmful intent.
