RELATIONS SEVERED
WITH CHINESE GOVERNMENT. ACTION BY JAPAN.. NEW REGIME DESIRED. (United Press Association—By ElectricTelegraph.—Copyright.) Received January 17, 8.5 a.m. TOKIO. Jan. 16. The Government has issued a statement severing diplomatic relations with Marshal Chiang Kai-shek’s regime. The severance of relations represents a compromise with the advocates of an outright declaration of war. Mr Ivoki Hirota (Foreign Minister) communicated the contents of the statement to the Italian and German Ambassadors prior to issuing it. It says: “The Japanese Government cease henceforth to deal with the Chinese National Government and look forward to the establishment and growth of the new Chinese regime, harmonious co-ordination with which can lenlly be counted upon. They wish that such a regime will fully co-operate for the adjustment of Sino--Japane.se relations and the building up of a rejuvenated China. Such does not involve a change in Japan’s policy of respecting the territorial integrity of China and other Powers’ rights and interests in China.”
