LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE.
MARKET UNSETTLED. LONDON, Jan. 15. The first Slock Exchange account of the New Year closed quietly on the defensive. Gilt-edged securities remain firm, though the prospect of new borrowing is tending to reduce activity. New Zealand issues are the weak spot among Dominion loans. Foreign bondholders continue to have a worrying time. Chinese and Japanese issues have collapsed owing to the prospect of a protracted war. Mid-week business tended to fall off in homo industrial issues and as a result prices are ragged. Owing to (be French political crisis, tlie stock and share markets are dull, and but little business is passing.
