HOUSE GUTTED.
A COMPLETE LOSS. Fire completely destroyed n residence at 16 Pahiatua Street. Palmerston North, shortly after midnight on Saturday. The property was owned by Mr W. Riddell, of Wellington, and occupied by Air G. Drinkwater. Tlie dwelling is covered by insurance totalling £3OO, the contents being insured for £250. Because of its isolated position and the fact that the house was surrounded by trees, the fire gained a. good hold before it was detected. The occupier was visiting friends in town when the outbreak occurred. Tlie Fire Brigade were summoned iiv telephone at 12.14. one engine responding. Two leads of hose were brought into play, but as the whole of the building was alight, nothing of value remained after the flames had been extinguished. The building is regarded as a complete loss. Attracted by tlie glare, which-lit the sky for a considerable time, a large crowd gathered in the vicinity of the fire, there being about 200 ears, in addition to a large number of pedestrians.
