MANAWATU TOURNEY. -FINALS REACHED. The finals were reached in the principal events in the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association’s open championship tourney yesterday afternoon, and these were due to be decided to-day. Iu the men’s championship the finalists are R. Robb (Wellington) and M. Ferkins (Hastings), while for the women’s title Misses N. and M. Beverley, of Matamata, are the contestants. Chisholm and Boddy, the Manawatu pair, have again earned the right to defend the doubles title, and the Misses Beverley are partners in the final of the; women’s doubles against Misses Gould and Wake. The standard of tennis over the three days lias been good and the courts have stood up to the solid play exceptionally well. Additional results of play are as follow: CHAMPIONSHIPS. MEN’S SINGLES. For the third successive day Wilding Park was bathed in brilliant sunshine, when the New Zealand junior tennis championships were continued this morning. The Australian tennis players, A. K. Quist and J. Bromwich, maintained their unbeaten recorcTthis season by beating J. D. Budge and G. Mako, 6 —o, 2 —6, 7—5. 6 —2, in the international tennis Test. The Americans, after a bad start, improved, but the Australians’ solid combination prevailed. PROFESSIONAL OFFERS. AMERICAN STAR. NEW YORK, Jan. 13. The Daily News states that the tennis player, J. D. Budge, ( received two bids if he turns professional. The sports promoter, Jimmy Johnston, offered him 65,000 dollars, and Mr Bill O’Brien cabled him a 75,000-dollar offer, including a four-months’ tour starting in January, 1939. contingent on Budge’s retention" of the top-rank-ing honours in the ensuing season.
