From Our Own Correspondent.) OPIKI, Aug. 19. The Women’s Institute meeting for August was well attended by visitors and mehibers. Mrs Norman, who presided, read’ the motto for the month, “Laugh, and the world laughs with you; weep, and you weep alone.” A bring-and-buy stall for federation funds did good business. The Gardening Circle was responsible for the entertainment and instructive part of the meeting. Competitions for the best miniature floating bowl and for the best miniature bowl were won by Mrs Cooksley and Miss Carson, respective! y, Miss D. Irwin and Mrs Irwin coming second and third, and Mrs Jackson and Mrs Cooksley second and third in the last mentioned class. In the gardening circle’s competitions for the best hyacinth bloom, Mrs Wilson •was the successful competitor for first place and Mrs Webb was second. The best anemone bloom resulted: Mrs Webb 1 and 2. Mr Bond gave an interesting lecturo on the classification and staging of btdbs, at the conclusion of which she answered many questions on the subject. lie was accorded a hearty vole of thanks, which was carried with acclamation. The next meeting will he a week later than usual. Hostesses will lx? Mrs Alve, Misses Alve and Miss Phillips. Ihe competitions will bo for the host wool rug and the best fruit cake. . The gardening circle competition will be for the best, vase of spring flowers in a 11 b jam jar, and the best polyanthus bloom. At a meeting of Opiki Sports Club Mrs Claridgc presided and accounts were passed for payment, and it was decided to present the trophies for the season at a dance, the date of which will be announced later.
