GASWORKS STRIKE.
SEEKING A SETTLEMENT. MELBOURNE, Aug. 20. The trades hall disputes committee has appealed to the Government to make a further effort to settle the gas strike, which has extended to other industries and is greatly inconveniencing industrial undertakings as well as householders.
Mr H. S. Bailey, the Chief Secretary, announced that the Government was exploring all avenues for a settlement, and Cabinet would reconsider the position on Monday. The strikers’ leaders have intimated that efforts to eject them from the gas works will be resisted.
