WATERSIDE LABOUR
THE WELLINGTON BUREAU, NEW SYSTEM READY. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 19. The Waterside Labour Bureau was opened officially to-day in the presence of the acting-Ministcr of Labour (Hon. P. C. Webb) and a large gathering of representatives of the shipping companies, Wellington Harbour Board and officials and members of the Wellington Watersiders’ Union. The working of the bureau ivas explained after which a trial engagement of labour was put through. Some labour was definitely engaged later in the afternoon and the bureau will be in full operation as from to-morrow morning.
Congratulating the shipping com panies’ representatives and wharf workers’ organisations on the inauguration of the scheme, Mr Webb said it was far 1 in advance of anything operating in any part of the world. The old system whereby men had to hang around waiting to be called on for work would now no longer exist. Equalisation of work had been established as a result of the introduction of the bureau system and a'minimum wage of £2 10s a week was guaranteed for every man in the union engaged on the waterfront.
“These improved conditions carry additional responsibility and I appeal to both shipowners and workers to work in the most co-operative spirit and to face every problem that arises in a spirit of co-operation along with determination to right any wrongs that may develop,” said Air Webb. “I/appeal to the companies and foremen not to tolerate any little pinpricking methods that bring many heartburnings and irritation into the ranks of the workers. I want to see ' the workers enjoying the best wages and working conditions and in return I appeal to them to play the game and give a fair day’s work for the improved conditions. I do not want to see the workers sweated like bullocks, but I do expect them to pull their weight in common with the workers of the country and facilitate the loading and discharge of all vessels in keeping with fair play.”
