CONTRACT BRIDGE.
LECTURE BY AIR J. G. ALLARD. A most instructive lecture on contract bridge was given by the authority, Mr J. Gordon Allard, of California, at Alessrs Collinson and Cunninghame’s yesterday. Air Allard was introduced to a gathering of women by Air H. L. Cunninghame. The speaker gave instruction in the response to an opening bid of .“one no trumps,” going on to demonstrate the forcing take-out and forcing re-bid. By his clear explanations Air Allard convinced his audience that contract bridge was not so difficult as beginners had been led to believe. He deprecated the “nuisance” bid, which, he, said, he had found common in New Zealand of making an interposing bid which meant nothing. He dismissed this by remarking, “If you have no place to go, why start put.” The lecturer’s gold’en rule was that “every bid in contract bridge should have something definite in relation to something else that has gone before.” Yesterday afternoon Air Allard gave instruction in correct bidding- and opening leads, and by special request this morning again at Alessrs Collinson and Cunninghame’s he outlined the use of the “asking” bid. Air Allard left this afternoon for Australia and he hopes to to the Dominion next year after visiting Egypt and Singapore, and to make the trip by air.
