INTER-SCHOOLS MATCH.
THIRD FIFTEENS AT PLAY
Playing their first school game for this season the P.N.B.H.S. 3rd XV defeated Dannevirke 3rd XV by 12—0 on the Boys’ High School ground yesterday afternoon. The teams were as follow:
Palmerston North.—Wilson, Mason, Tucker, Bell; Rutherfurd, J. B. Nash, Pegden; Nicholson; Winters, Abra--1 ham, Bray, Kerin; Armstrong (captain), Clare, O’Neill. Dannevirke. —Fryer (captain) Hannan, Lyons, Stark; Tatere, Farrel; Keen; Smith; Robinson, Franklin, O’Hagen, Harris; Forsyth, Craven, Peeti. Dannevirke won the toss and elected to play with the advantage of the sun. Soon after the commencement Dannevirke were caught offside, giving Mason a shot at goal from near the hallway line, but the ball fell short. Repeatedly the Palmerston North forwards broke through, but fine line kicking by Fryer saved the local side from scoring. Wilson, the Palmerston North full-back, secured the ball in his own half, and made a determined run, only to be grassed a few yards from the goal-line. A free kick relieved the position. A centre kick by Rutherfurd caught Dannevirke out of position. Abraham and Kerin took play down to the goal-line, where Fryer held it up for a short time. O’Neill secured from a ruck to dive over in the corner. Mason missed the kick. The visitors for a short time, had Palmerston North defending, during which time Fryer had a drop-kick at goal, the ball striking the upright and bouncing back. Half-time was called soon after, there being no alteration in the score—Palmerston North 3, Dannevirke 0. After" the interval Palmerston North attacked strongly. Nash cut his man out and passed to Rutherfurd, who was collared near the posts. Handling in the scrum by the local forwards lost them their chance of furthering the score, but it came a few minutes later. After Wilson and Fryer had exchanged long kicks, Wilson made a nice run, evaded a number of tacklers, and scored wide out. Mason again missed. O’Neill broke I ■ away with the ball at his toe, but again the Dannevirke full-back saved with a good kick. Armstrong and | Bray started a passing bout, but a | knock-on spoilt the movement. Dribbling rushes by Dannevirke, beaded by Peeti and Forsyth, nearly opened
their score, but Pegden, the Palmerston North half-back, went down on the ball in front of his own posts to save. Wilson, who had proved himself earlier in the game as a very determined runner, ran through the opposition to hand on to Mason on the goal-line. The kick missed. A few moments later, from a ruck on the line, Kerin increased Palmerston North’s score. The kick again failed. The final whistle sounded a short time later. Palmerston North 12, Dannevirke 0. Mr C. Eglinton carried the whistle. The teams were later served with afternoon tea at College House.
