PAHIATUA.

PAHIATUA, Aug. 17. The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua District High School Committee was held last evening, Mr G. G. Taylor presiding. The chairman reported that Cabinet had agreed to the erection of outbuildings at the school. The balance-sheet for the children’s party showed a profit qf £3l 6s 2d. The Wellington Education Board advised that at a recent meeting; it had passed a resolution as follows: “That the report of the ward members be received and that the school committee’s attention be drawn to the unsatisfactory condition of the grounds and that, in view of the large credit balances in their general and special accounts, they be asked to state whether or not they are prepared to carry out the work of re-sealing the area in question. In the event of it not being possible to complete the full area, what area could your committee re-seal this season, or what amount is your committee prepared to allocate for this work?” Tlie chairman said that the job was a £2OO or £3OO one. It was agreed to offer £SO from the special fund and £25 from the general account. The chairman pointed out that the matter would have to come up at the next meeting for a decision and that in the meantime he would advise the board that a previous offer of £3O still stood. Tho funeral of the late Mr William Saunders took place at the Mangatainoka cemetery yesterday afternoon. The deceased gentleman, ivlio was in his 92nd year, was born in England in 1854 at Bromsgrove, Worcester, and came to New Zealand 63 years ago in the sailing vessel Conflict, landing at Wellington. For five years Mr Saunders was engaged in carpentering work in Wellington. He next turned to farming, residing at Pahatanui from where in 1885 he moved to Colyton. He made another shift to Makomako and moved again some years later to Mangatainoka where he worked as a carpenter again, retiring about 20 years ago and subsequently moving into Pahiatua. His wife predeceased him about 12 years ago nnd there are no family. Mr Saunders had no relatives in New Zealand.
