POHANGINA VALLEY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) POHANGINA, Aug. 18. Arbor Day was celebrated at the Pohangina School by the planting of a macroearpa shelter belt, each pupil planting a tree. Air E. A. Ilockly, representing the School Committee, and the teacher, Air G. AI. Thomson, addressed the gathering and were accorded cheers at the close of the ceremony. The monthly meeting of the Pohangina Methodist Ladies’ Guild was held at “Benmohr,” the home of Airs N. 11. Aloar, Mrs C. A. Boston presiding over a good attendance. Apologies for absence were received from Alesdames Dawson, Aladdison, and Passey. Miss Klink and Airs Blixt were welcomed as visitors. A vote of sympathy with Airs Passey in the loss of her sister-in-law was carried. A market stall in aid of the church refurnishing fund did brisk business, the very satisfactory sum of £1 49 2d being realised. Two interesting competitions were held, the winners being Airs F. AVagstaff and Airs J. T. Aloar. Airs Blixt gave an elocutionary item entitled “Ain’t Men Funny?” Afternoon tea was served, after which Airs Aloar was accorded a vote of thanks for her hospitality. A vote of thanks to Airs Blixt for her donation of six beautifully covered coat hangers to the market stall was also carried. The next meeting of the guild will be held at the pnrsonage, Ashhurst. ' There was a good attendance at the fortnightly euchre party, proceeds being in aid of the Anglican Church funds. The night was bitterly cold, but huge log fires made the playing room cosy. Airs A. Balmer won the prize in tile ladies’ section,- while Air L. Warded won in the men’s section. The consolation prizes were awarded to Miss A. Brown and Air 11. Aloar. The trophies were donated .by Airs L. T. Harland, to whom Air A. E. Orgias expressed the committee’s appreciation.
