MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. AMATEUR CHAMBIONSHIBS. The amateur championships of the Manawatu Boxing Association were held in the Opera House last evening, and although the entries were very disappointing the eight bouts which were •staged provided plenty ofaction for the large crowd in attendance. The officials were:—Beferce, Mr J. B. Evans; judges, Messrs G. Wateliorn and F. Colvin; timekeepers, Messrs'N. D. Stubbs and W. Crystal; announcer, Mr' C. N. Rabone; stage manager, Mr J. Burves. Tho new title-holders are as lollow: Paperweight.—G. Hastings (only entry). Flyweight.—L. b IcLa ugh la n. Bantamweight.—L. MeLauglilan. Featherweight.—D. Coughlan. Lightweight.— J. Collins. —G. Downes (only entry). Middleweight;—F. Mclvor (only entry). Light-heavyweight.—-J. Bage. Heavyweight.—A. Woods. The bouts resulted as follow: — FLYWEIGHT. L MeLauglilan (Balmerston North), 7.13, defeated W. Bcatson (Feilding), 8.0, on points, maintaining a lead all tho way, although Bcatson showed considerable promise. MeLauglilan used both his hands effectively and was quick to take advantage of any opening. In tlie third round they fought themselvos to a standstill. These were the only entries in the division and MrLaughlan took tho title. BANTAMWEIGHT. L. MeLauglilan (Balmerston North), 7.13, deefated D. Satherley (Foxton), 8.4, the latter being disqualified alter three warnings for holding. McLaughlan, who had already collected one title, set about gaining a second with a will and it came Ids way more easily than he expected. Satherley showed a respectable style but for Ids holding oil habit. It was the only bout in the division. FEATHERWEIGHT. D. Coughlan (Ralmerston North), 9.0, deefated H. Pearson (Balmerston North), 8.11, on points after a hectic three rounds. , , Final.—D. Coughlan defeated DMcPherson (Balmerston North), 8.8. Coughlan with liis extra weight and added reach led all the way, although liis opponent put up a game fight and ids performance was popular with the crowd. LIGHTWEIGHT. J. Collins (Balmerston North), 9.8-1, defeated W. Porter (Shannon), 9.9, oil points. It was a- very even contest, Init Collins was the more scientific. 'he second round was rather a quiet affair, but in the final round there was a toc-to-too encounter'. Porter refused to go down to sonic solid punches to the face. , , These being the only competitors in the division, Collins received the title. L I G HT-HEAV Y WEI G HT. J Page (Balmerston North), 11.7, defeated S. Yiavacis (Balmerston North), 11.7, tho bout being stopped in the third round. Bage was always on top, though in the second round his opponent (ought back gamely. In the third Yiavacis was sent down twice and when lie was dropped a third time tho referee stepped m and raised Page’s hand as the winner. I hev were the only entrants in the division ; thus the title went to Page. HEAVYWEIGHT. A. Woods (Shannon), 13.1. defeated B. McKenzie (Feilding), 13.3, on P Tinal.—Woods deefated V. Barnao (Balmerston North), 13.3. The first two rounds were very evenly contested, but both men went for it m the third. Barnao receiving some punishment which sent him down twice. He came back gamely, but Woods received tlie
decision by a good-margin. At the conclusion the certificates and trophies were presented by the president (Mr E. R. Wimsett). . It was announced that the local professional, It. Conghlan, is to meet Loveridge in New Plymouth at an early date.
