PAHIATUA.

PAHIATUA, Aug. 16. Mrs K. L. Warren presided over a meeting of the Presbyterian Ladies’ Social Guild. It was agreed to hold a shop on a date to bo arranged. Mrs Warren called upon Mrs 0. Drever, who is leaving the district, to accept a gift. Mrs C. Carrad won a jelly-eating cofnpetition, each member having been provided with an egg cup of jelly and a knitting needle with jvhich to eat it. The platform at the Pahiatua railway station has not been lighted for the rail cars, which stop at the station after darkness has fallen, owing to the staff not being on duty on Sundays. Approval has now been given for the installation of a time switch to control the lights. They will be switched on about 15 minutes prior to the arrival of the first rail car after sunset and the platform will be illuminated for all subsequent trains.

Mr E. M. Wright presided over a meeting of the Bush Table Tennis Association, when Mr F. Seymour was elected lion, secretary in place of Mr I. Coleman. It was decided that the inter-club committee draw up the fixtures, and that one round be played off, Pahiatua to play Eketahuna at Eketahuna. The rules to be adopted are those of the Wairarapa Association. Concussion as the result of a fall when on the western bank at Athletic Park, Wellington, was sustained on Saturday afternoon by Mr I. C. Boyens, of Pahiatua, who is at present in the Wellington Hospital. Mr Boyens was a spectator a.t the first Test and it appears that he fainted in the large crowd after the game, falling down some concrete steps. On Saturday afternoon two Wairarapa representative basketball teams journeyed to Pahiatua to engage the Bush A and B teams. The visitors won the A grade by 15 goals to 13; Bush won the B grade match by 14 to 12. The following Rugby team has been selected to represent tho Bush juniors to play Whirarapa, at Carterton on Saturday: R. Welch, B. Murcli, W. Brightwell, R. McGlaslian, D. Gough, P Twentyman, P. Neary. H. Hughes, H. Eagle, G. Kershaw, R. Lawrence (captain), F. Sigvertsen, T. Fouhy, E. Fafoita, Claude Goss. Reserves, O. Davis and K. Elliott (backs), R. Udy, B. Fergus and L. Hunt (forwards).
