ATLANTIC FLIGHT
CALEDONIA’S TRIP. DENSE CLOUD AND RAIN. STRONG WIND MET. (United Press Association—By Electric Te 1 egrap h—Copy right.) (British Official Wireless.) Received August 17, 11.55 a.m. RUGBY, Aug. 16. The Imperial Airways flying-boat Caledonia, which arrived at' Port Botwood, Newfoundland, from Foynes, Ireland, to-day, at first experienced favourable conditions over the Atlantic, but they deteriorated later and the boat flew for some hours in dense cloud and rain showers. She escaped those conditions somewhat by climbing to 2000 feet, but the head winds increased and early in the afternoon the Caledonia reported the strength of the wind at from 50 to 55 miles an hour. Captain Wilcoekson, who was in command, said that the wireless organisation had proved efficient throughout the flight. The Pan-American Cupper will use the southern route via Bermuda and the Azores on her next flight to Southampton, which begins to-day, and she will return the same way.
