SPEED LIMITS.
APPROACHES TO TOWNS
AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION DISCUSSION.
That in some cases the new 30 miles per hour signs which have been erected at the approaches to towns have been placed too far out of the areas in which speed restriction is necessary was the opinion expressed at last evening’s meeting of the executive of the Manawatu Automobile Association by the chairman (Mr N. H. Mackie). He instanced the cases of Marton, Hunterville, and Mangaweka, stating that with reference to Mangaweka the sign could reasonably be at least half a mile nearer the township. It was decided to direct the attention of the Wanganui Association to the fact. Mr R. T. Jaggard said that the same applied to the sign on the Palmerston North side of Woodville, and the Hawke’s Bay Association are to be acquainted with the fact. It was stated that so far no signs had been erected at the approaches to villages, and to meet the situation the Commissioner of Transport had approved of a Class B sign, which consisted of a square board painted yellow and bearing the' words “Reduce Speed,” with an appropriate reason also given. So far as Manawatu was concerned, it was pointed out that suitable localities would be Longburn and Mllson in the immediate vicinity of Palmerston North. It was felt that in many cases the adoption of this sign would prove more effective than a hard and fast speed limit.
