DEBATING SOCIETY.

LAST NIGHT’S MEETING. The Palmerston North Debating Society held its weekly meeting last evening., The rules of the society were revised, some additions being made. “That the Thrift of the Individual is in the Interests of the Community,” was the subject of the debate, which was won by the negative. Those taking part were: Dessrs A. C. Philpott, G. Pratt, E. Shavf, C. Richardson, B. H. Boyce and Miss Bird. Mr F. D. Tucker acted as judge, and a vote of thanks was accorded him. Mr C. Richardson was declared the best speaker. It was announced that Mr H. G. Mills and Mr J. S. Hornbloiv had offered to donato a cup for competition in a five-minute prepared speech. A vote of appreciation was accorded the donors. It was also reported that a number of members were taking part in the Manawatu Competitions. A contest among the lady members of the society for the Watsonia Cup is to take place on August 30 on the lines adopted last season.
