FROM NAPIER HOSPITAL BOARD.

DR. BERRY’S DECISION

NAPIER, Aug. 16. Dr. J. A. Berry tabled his resignation as a. member of the Hawke’s Bay Hospital Board at the monthly meeting of the board to-day. Dr. Berry is one of Napier’s three members on the board. . . Advice of his intention to resign had been received before the board meeting in a letter from Dr Berry to the managing secretary, Mr E. T. Rees. Dr. Berry addressed the following letter to the chairman of the board, Mr C. Lassen : “I understand the hoard will, at its meeting-on August 16, be considering the report of the Royal Commission. Seeing I have been criticised in matters of treatment and comportment,. it is natural I am not in agreement with the report as a whole. However, on mature consideration I am in full agreement with the finding that it is undesirable that a member of the honorary staff should he also a member of the board.

“I, therefore, take this opportunity of informing you it is my intention at the conclusion of the ensuing hoard meeting to tender to you my resignation for the balance of my terjn. As an lionory sugeon, I will then feel free to give of my best in such a capacity. which, after all, is. my job.” A motion accepting Dr. Berry’s resignation was moved by the chairman, and in the discussion which followed members paid tribute to the sincerity and manner in which Dr. Berry had carried out his duties as a boari member. ■ ' • Dr. Berry said it had always seemed wrong to him that a member of the honorary staff should be a member of the board, particularly when that board was solit into rival factions. A member of the honorary staff who had the strongest faction on his side might, if unscrupulous, use his power in not the best interests of the hospital, while a member of the honorary staff who belonged to a weaker faction might be subject to indignities.
