TOKOMARU.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) TOKOMARU, Aug. 12.
On Thursday evening a team from the Moutoa Miniature Rifle Club journeyed to Tokomaru to shoot against the local team for the T.M.O.L. Shield. The visitors won by 15 points, the score being Moutoa 483, Tokomaru 458. Following are the results, Moutoa team being mention ed first: J. Lucinsky, 99, R. J. McKenzie 97, A. Smith 94, R. Scanlon 99, T. Downs 94; Tokomaru, J. McNeill 99, M. L. Standish 93, B. Walden 91, N. J. Whyte” 94, J. Chivers 91. The August meeting of the Tokomaru Women’s Institute was held in the hall. Mrs Mac Nab presided over a good attendance. The president welcomed the members and visitors. Apologies for absence were received from Miss C. Jamieson, Mesdamcs A. Wilton, L. Simpson, A. Boote, A. Burt, and M. Corlett. The motto for the month was, “Life is a camera — look pleasant.” Miss M. Atkinson and Mrs Mac Nab were elected delegates to attend the group meeting in Shannon. A demonstration was given by Mrs Child, of Palmerston North, on scissors and crayon work. She also brought a display of handwork. which was greatly admired. The competition for the best wood-pulp 'flower was won by Miss E. Adams, with Mrs Mac Nab 2 and 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Lloyd and Jamieson. The competition for the September meeting is for the best Christmas novelty, cost not to exceed one shilling. The demonstration is to be Mrs Moyes, of Linton, on artcles made from old felt hats. The fortnightly meeting of the Lind Lodge of Druids was held on Wednesday, when Bro. R. Mason presided over a good attendance. One new member was proposed, After Lodge closed a bowls match was played for the Friendly Societies’ Shield, between Lind and Oroua Lodge (Palmerston North). The match resulted in a win for Oroua, the scores being 24—17 and 18—1.
Miss V. Guy is spending an extended holiday in the north. Mrs J, Mac Nab is spending a holiday at Waipukurau. She is the guest of her sister, Mrs F. Hewinson.
A meeting of the Tokomaru branch of the Mothers’ Union was hold in St. Aidan’s Church yesterday afternoon. The president welcomed all members and visitors. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Miss J. McAdams, of Palmerston North, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs J. McAdams. Mr and Mrs A. Thompson and family have left Tokomaru to reside at Dannevirke.
A girls’ basketball team and a boys’ football team journeyed to Opiki on Tuesday to play friendly matches with Opiki teams. The visitors won in both games, girls 17—3, boys 31—3.
